Reference Sources are created for a general or specialized audience. They are :

Books are written by and for a variety of audiences. Newspapers are published daily, weekly, monthly, etc. Newspapers also: Popular Magazines are published weekly, monthly. Popular magazines also are: Scholarly Journals are published monthly, quarterly, yearly. Journals also: World Wide Web Pages It's everything - from full-text books to online shopping, from greeting cards to sounds of pulsars, from pornographic films to original scholarship.
