Sociology Links What is Sociology? Why do we behave in certain ways? Why do people treat others differently based on gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social class and age? Why does the United States have the highest divorce rate? Why do people commit crimes? Why is there poverty? Why is there controversy about same sex marriages? How do politics influence our everyday lives? Why do some people have limited access to education? Sociology is a discipline which studies societies, social structures, behaviors, and individuals’ relationships in order to understand the world and its people. Why Major in Sociology? Majoring in sociology can be an exciting path at the college level. Courses focus on various aspects of society including gender, race, ethnicity and social structures such as the family, school system, religion. There are many social problems in our world today. Sociologists attempt to understand these social problems by examining various social factors. Sociology courses can lead you into a career focusing on social factors in addition to the awareness of being an active member in your community. Sociologists have careers in several workplaces such as government, social services, business, health professions, education, the criminal justice system, research, journalism, politics, public relations, and public administration.
