Spring Evening 2009

Final Exam Week: May 11 - 14

The final exam will be on Monday, May 11, starting at 7:15 pm. There is no class meeting on Wednesday, May 13. You will finish the class on May 11.

On the final, you will need to:

1. Write a paragraph about a past event.

2. Write a paragraph about your future plans.

3. Write some sentences using a list of words (similar to the exercise on page 150 in your textbook).

Have fun preparing!

2. Learn about and practice writing complex sentences (adverbial clauses using time expressions and the subordinating conjunction because)

Important Note: The Unit 2 Test that was originally schedule for Wednesday, 2/25, has been changed. It will be combined with the Unit 3 Test.

1. Write a second (final) draft of Composition #2 - Describing a Person. Staple it on top of your 1st draft (the draft with the green editing/correction marks) and give it to the instructor on Monday, 3/2.
2. Write a first draft of Composition #3 - Describing a Room.

Week 3

Wed. 2/4

In class, students will:

1. Discuss the simple present (am, is, are) and simple past (was, were) forms of the verb Be.

2. Discuss the use of There + Be + adjective, noun, place.

3. Write a group paragraph to describe a picture to practice using the There + Be form.

For homework due Monday, 2/9, students will:

1. In the textbook, complete Activity 14 on page 20, Activity 16 on page 21, and Activity 21 on page 29.

2. Read the information Writer's Note: The Title of a Paragraph on the bottom of page 25 and top of page 26.

Important Note: The syllabus says there is a test on Monday, 2/9. Don't worry! The test will be on Wednesday, 2/11, not Monday. The test will be on information from pages 2-29 in the textbook. The instructors will give you examples in class on Monday about the types of questions on Wednesday's test.

Mon. 2/2

In class, students will:

1. Review prepositions in, at, & on by doing Activity 7 on page 10.
2. Review statement and question sentence punctuation by doing Activity 8 on page 11.

3. Review capitalization, correct word order and complete sentence structures by checking Activity 13 on page 18 and then Activities 9 & 10 on pages 12-14.

4. Share 1st drafts of "A Place I Want to Visit" paragraphs with classmates, do peer editing, and begin writing the 2nd draft.

For homework due Wednesday, 2/4, students will:

1. In the textbook, do Activity 24 on pages 31-33.
2. On a separate piece of paper, complete the Final Draft of your paragraph about a place you would like to visit. Click here for directions if you were absent from class on Wed. 1/28 and did not get the handout. You will give this paragraph to the instructors stapled on top of the 1st draft and peer editing paper to earn points towards your final grade.
