Week 3

Thurs. 9/10

In class:

1.  Share their writing from pages 31-33 in the textbook.
2.  Discuss the use of There + Be + adjective, noun, place and complete Activity 17 on pages 22-23.
3.  Discuss rules for writing titles pages 25-26.

For homework due Tuesday, 9/15:

The first test of the semester is on Tuesday, September 15.  It will be on Chapter 1 pages 1-33. To prepare, please review the information in the WRITER'S NOTE sections in the chapter on pages 3, 4, 7, 8, 9-10, & 25-26, and carefully study pages 15-17 & 19. 

Also review the following exercises:

Activity 8 pp. 8-9

Activity 7 p. 10

Activity 9 p. 12

Activity 10 pp. 13-14

Activity 13 p. 18

Activity 16 p. 21


The test will require students to complete exercises similar to those in the activities.  Also, students will need to write a paragraph about a country they'd like to visit.  To prepare for this writing, carefully review the comments written in green pen on the final draft of the A Country I Want to Visit paragraph that Diane returned to you in class on Thursday 9/10.

 

Tues. 9/8

In class, students will:

1.  Discuss complete sentences, fragments, and typical sentence word order in English and finish Activities 12 and 13 on page 18.
2.  Discuss there is/are sentences.

For homework Thursday, 9/10:

1.  In the textbook, do Activity 24 on pages 31-33.
 

Week 2

Thurs. 9/3

In class:

1.  Continue Unit 1 of the textbook - pages 11-14

 

2.  Peer edit 1st drafts of paragraph about a city or country you want to visit.

For homework due Tuesday, 9/8:

1.  Rewrite your paragraph about the city/country you want to visit ( Click here for directions if you were absent from class on Tues. 9/1  and did not get the handout).  You'll give this 2nd draft to Diane on Tuesday, 9/8, for her to grade.

 

2.  In the textbook, finish Activity 10 on page 13.

3.  Study the information on pages 16, 17, and 19 of the textbook.
 

4.  Do Activity 16 on page 21.

Tues. 9/1

In class, students will:

1.  Continue Unit 1 of the textbook - prepositions in, at, & on and writing complete sentences pages 5-10.

For homework due Thursday, 9/3, students will:

1.  In the textbook, finish Activity 6 on pages 8-9, read the information on pages9-10 and do Activity 7 on page 10.
2.  On a separate piece of paper, write a paragraph about a place you would like to visit.  Click here for directions if you were absent from class on Tues. 9/1  and did not get the handout.

In class:

1.  Start Unit 1 of the textbook - Understanding Sentence Basics pages 1-4.

For homework:

1.  In the textbook, finish Activity 3 on page 5
2.  Write 5-6 sentences about a food that you or someone you know likes.  Write these sentences on a separate piece of paper OR in your textbook at the bottom of page 5 (your choice).

Tues. 8/25

In class, students will:

1.  Discuss information on the course syllabus.

2.  Get to know each other by brainstorming, writing, and asking questions.

3.  Produce a writing sample (autobiography) in class.

For homework, students will:

1.  Buy the textbook "Great Sentences for Great Paragraphs"
