Week 2
Wed. 9/2

In class:

1.  Discuss negative forms of the verb Be.

 

 

For homework due Wed. 9/9:

1.  In the textbook, Exercise 16 page 11, Exercise 17 page 12, and Exercise 18 page 13.
2. In the workbook, Practice 13-18 on pages 9-13.

 

Remember:  Monday, September 7 is the Labor Day holiday.  The college is closed!  No class!  Stay home and study. 

IMPORTANT CHANGE:  The test for Chapter 1 will NOT be on Wednesday, 9/9.  We are changing the date to Monday, 9/14.  Your first test on Chapter 1 is on Monday, 9/14.

Mon. 8/31

In class:

1.  Discuss the textbook homework on pages 2 and 3 (students need to check the workbook homework themselves and ask individual questions before or after class)

2.  Discuss plural noun + are

3.  Discuss pronouns and contraction forms.

For homework due Wed. 9/2:

1.  In the textbook, do Exercise 10 on page 7 and Exercise 12 on pages 8-9.
2. In the workbook, do Practice 3 through 12 on pages 2 to 5.

3.  On a separate piece of paper, write a paragraph using forms of the verb to be (am, is, are).  See the Word document handout passed out in class Monday evening for details.  Click here if you were absent and need it.

Week 1

Wed. 8/26

In class, students will start Chapter 1 in the textbook.  They will:
 

1.  Ask and write sentences about where students are from and the locations of their countries. 
 

2.  Discuss the difference between a and an.
 

3.  Practice using the correct simple present subject-verb forms of the verb Be (am, is, are)

For homework due Mon. 8/31, students will:  (the pages will be posted here after class Wed. 8/26)

1.  In the textbook, do Exercises 3 and 4  on pages 2 and 3 .
2. In the workbook, do Practice 1, 2, and 3  on pages  1 and 2 .

Mon. 8/24

In class, students will:

1.  Discuss information on the course syllabus.

 

2. Discuss what nouns, pronouns, and verbs are.

For homework due Wed. 8/26, students will:

1.  Buy the textbook and workbook Basic English Grammar

 

Course Textbook - Basic English Grammar, Third Edition, by Betty S. Azar & Stacy A. Hagen
Important!  Both the textbook and workbook (2 separate books) are REQUIRED for this course.  The first half of these books will be used for ESL010 Grammar I.  The second half of these books will be used next semester also in ESL020 Grammar II.
