This is it - your last written
homework assignment! For graded homework #10, please write
a story about something good or happy that happened to you. Read the
example paragraphs on pages 32,43, and 53 of your textbook. When you
write your story, be sure to: 1. Write on a 8 1/2 by 11 inch piece of paper. 2. Use dark pencil or a black pen. 3. Write your name, date, class (ESL012), and assignment number (Homework 10) in the upper right corner of the paper. 4. Write the title (A Happy Memory) of the assignment on the top line of the paper. 5. DOUBLE-SPACE! 6. Use a capital letter to begin each sentence. 7. Use a period to end each sentence. 8. Use the simple past tense. 9. Write between 100-120 words. 10. Give the paper to the instructor on Wednesday, May 2. The assignment is worth 20 points. |

1. You will have a test on Wednesday. On the test, you need to write 3 paragraphs of 7-9 sentences each to describe leaving your native country, coming to the United States, and your first impressions of Arizona. 1. Study the information on the handout, "Punctuating Dates". On the back of the paper, write 4-5 sentences of your own that include dates and past tense verbs. If you were absent and didn't get the handout in class, click here to download it.
2. For Graded Homework #9 titled "First Days", please write two paragraphs about your feelings on two different first days: the first few days you were in the United States and the first day you attended school in the United States. What did you do? What did you see? What did you think or feel about what you saw? Did anything surprise, confuse, excite, or disappoint you? Write 4-5 sentences on the lines provided at the bottom of page 75 about your own experiences and feelings after you came to the United States for the first time. 2. Following the example sentence structures, write 1-2 sentences about your own feelings when you first arrived in the United States. At the bottom of page 72, write 4-5 sentences to describe when, how (by plane, car, bus, foot) and who you traveled to the United States with. 2. For graded homework assignment #8, please put the information you wrote in your book at the bottom of pages 69 and 72 on a separate piece of paper and add any other information you need to tell the story of why, when, and how you came to the United States. Write 5 groups of 3 sentences each (a question, affirmative, and negative sentence) using irregular verbs. For example: Did you drink orange juice yesterday morning? No, I didn't drink orange juice. 1. Please read the story "Life in Cuba" on page 65. Then, write some sentences to describe what typical life in your native country is like. What is the weather usually like? What kind of clothes do people usually wear? What time do people usually get up? How do people typically get to work (car, bus, subway, bicycle, horse)? What do people typically eat or drink? What types of houses or apartments do most people live in? Write about anything that describes typical, normal, daily life in your hometown. Then, write some sentences that describe what life is like in the city you live in now in Arizona. |

Please write one or two paragraphs (100-120 words total) to describe your favorite holiday (from your native country or the United States) or celebration (such as a birthday, wedding, anniversary, or graduation). Explain when the holiday or celebration is, where and why it is celebrated, and what people usually eat, say, and do on that day. Look at the example paragraphs in the book about Chinese New Year, Ethiopian New Year, and Honduran Independence Day. If your country does not have an Independence Day holiday, write about another national or patriotic holiday from your country. |

1. The week of Monday, 3/10 to Friday, 3/14 is Spring Break for the college. There are no classes for this week. The library and Information Commons in Estrella Hall will be open from 8:00AM to 5:00PM on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday if you want to use the computers at school. All services will be closed on Thursday and Friday. Enjoy the vacation! 2. For homework due Monday, 3/17, please review the questions that you discussed in groups on page 48, read the stories on pages 49-50, and complete the exercises on page 51. |
