Building the Future

Designing Learning Spaces that
Promote Engagement
In 2005, Estrella Mountain explored more effective approaches to the traditional classroom learning environment and engaged in discussions that resulted in the unique transformation of two existing classrooms into prototype "Learning Studios".

The new “Learning Studios” provided faculty and learners an opportunity to experiment with radical flexibility in space, furnishings, and technology.Throughout the project, the college collected and assessed feedback from faculty and learners. As a result, the college opened a new classroom complex that includes twenty two “Learning Studios”.

With the opening of twenty two new “Learning Studios”, faculty and learners have continued to experiment, test and asses these spaces. To date, the college has conducted several assessments creating a culture of evidence that documents the overall impact of learning space design on student engagement.
