Beta Alpha XI Chapter
of
Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa, International Honor Society of the Two-Year College, is committed to promoting scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among talented community college students. Beta Alpha Xi, the Estrella Mountain Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, has achieved an outstanding Five Star Ranking since forming in 1995 and for the last two years has achieved ranking as one of the Top 100 chapters in the Phi Theta Kappa organization.

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among community and technical junior college students.  To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

The Beta Alpha XI chapter of Phi Theta Kappa offers membership invitations to students who have achieved a minimum 3.25 GPA, completed twelve (12) college level credit hours, and are in good standing with Estrella Mountain Community college.  Those who accept membership are encouraged to participate fully through the chapter development program, which focuses on the four hallmarks - scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship.

Chapter membership meetings are held four times monthly in Komatke C - Room 109 (just south of the Courtyard Grill cafeteria and on the right side of the hallway before Student Life and art display cases). The following chapter meetings scheduled for Fall 2008:

     Thursdays at 5 p.m.     Aug 28, Sep 11, Sep 25, Oct 9, Oct 23, Nov 6, Nov 20, Dec 4

     Fridays at 1 p.m.     Aug 29, Sep 12, Sep 26, Oct 10, Oct 24, Nov 7, Nov 21, Dec 5

Members are encouraged to attend to learn what programs and service activities are scheduled and available to chapter members. Competitiveness for scholarships and university transfer frequently requires that students be actively involved in campus and community organizations. Phi Theta Kappa can provide opportunities for involvment that may result in significant rewards for those who take part.

Those interested in membership are also welcome to attend chapter meetings and see firsthand the benefits of Phi Theta Kappa membership.

New member invitations are extended each fall and spring semester from the Office of EMCC College President Dr. Ernie Lara. Fall invitations are expected to be mailed out to eligible students during the week of September 15. Induction of new members is scheduled for Friday evening, October 24, 2008.
