The Phi Theta Kappa Society, modeled after Phi Beta Kappa, the university honor society, and founded in 1918 by the Presidents of Missouri Junior Colleges at Stephens college in Columbia, Missouri, has the following purposes: To recognize academic achievement and excellence, provide leadership training, and create an intellectual climate for interchange of ideas and ideals. Over the years, Phi Theta Kappa has continued to promote among its members the four hallmarks: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. In 1929, Phi Theta Kappa gained official recognition as the honor society of two-year colleges by the American Association of Junior and Community Colleges.

Beta Alpha Xi, founded in 1995 as Estrella Mountain Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, achieved an outstanding five star ranking since our conception.

Through the years, Beta Alpha Xi has implemented honors topics and international service projects presented by Phi Theta Kappa.
