Part 4 : Achieving Lean Living

SUCCESSFUL WEIGHT LOSS

How To Become A Normal Eater

Chronic dieting doesn't work. In fact, it can make you gain weight. This is frustrating when you know that obesity can cause or aggravate heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, arthritis and diabetes. Rather than dieting, changes in food selections, an exercise plan, and an "attitude adjustment" can help you lose weight and keep it off. In other words, you can learn how to become a normal eater.

Healthiest Diet

Look beyond cottage cheese and discover the diet that's best for your overall health. The healthiest diet is rich in complex carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, fiber, and low fat dairy and protein. It's moderate in meats, polyunsaturated fats, and cholesterol; and it's low in saturated fat, sugar. alcohol, caffeine, simple carbohydrates, sodium, and cured meats. This "diet" is the most important focus of successful weight loss, but it also helps to know about calories. A "calorie counter" can help you select the best nutritional choices for the least number of calories. Diet changes should be slow and permanent. Don't avoid any given food altogether; by allowing yourself the freedom to eat it, you will eventually be able to be satisfied with one serving and feel no guilt!

Exercise

Walking is the easiest and safest exercise. After checking with your doctor, exercise at least three times weekly for one-half hour or more. Exercise will make you burn more calories by raising your metabolic rate and by burning calories related to the activity. Exercise has been shown to minimize depression and is essential for success.

Attitude

The scale does not measure success. Stop weighing yourself, follow the healthy diet and get regular exercise and you will find your weight does not zoom up. Preoccupation with food is another block to dieters. Involve yourself in activities you enjoy that don't include or revolve around food. The less you think about food, the less hungry you will feel. Work towards loving your body whether heavier or thinner. Focus on how special you are and use self-talk to validate your worthiness. Establish good eating habits. Take at least 20 minutes to eat a meal and sit down at a table and chew slowly to maximize enjoyment of the food. Avoid eating in front of the television or while reading. Shop for foods that are healthy for you and that you will enjoy. Look at your food habits for a few days to identify other areas for improvement.

Normal Eating

By following these healthy diet, exercise, and attitude recommendations, you will find that you can slowly relearn normal eating behaviors. You'll become comfortable with eating when hungry and allowing your body to let you know when you've had enough. Cast off the depriving weight loss diets and follow a healthy diet and exercise plan to reach your goals.
