Part 13 : CPR/First Aid/Safety

 

CPR

Adult

        Establish unresponsiveness

        Activate EMS

        Open airway (head tilt/ chin lift) check for breathing (look listen feel) for 3 to 5 seconds.

        If not breathing give 2 slow breaths (watch chest rise and fall)

        Check for signs of circulation (including normal breathing, coughing and movement). If signs of circulation are present continue rescue breathing (1 breath every 5 seconds).

        If signs of circulation are absent, find landmarks, begin chest compressions (15 compressions to 2 ventilations)

        After 1-minute (4 cycles) check signs of circulation, if no signs of circulation are present continue CPR.

Infant

        Establish unresponsiveness

        Activate EMS

        Open airway (head tilt/ chin lift) check for breathing (look listen feel) for 3 to 5 seconds.

        If not breathing give 2 puffs of air(watch chest rise and fall).

        Check for signs of circulation. If signs of circulation are present continue rescue breathing (1 breath every 3 seconds).

        If signs of circulation are absent, find landmarks, begin chest compressions (5 compressions to 1 ventilations)

        After 1-minute (20 cycles) check for signs of circulation, if no signs of circulation are present continue CPR.

 

CHOKING

Adult/ Child
Conscious

        Ask the victim, "are you choking?"

        If victim can speak, cough or breathe do not interfere.

        If completely obstructed perform abdominal thrusts until the foreign object is expelled or the victim becomes unconscious.

Infant

Conscious:

        Confirm complete airway obstruction, check for serious breathing difficulty (ineffective cough no strong cry).

        Give 5 back blows, and 5 chest thrusts.

        Continue until object is expelled or victim becomes unconscious.

Unconscious

        Open airway

        Activate 911

        Attempt to ventilate, if unsuccessful reposition head and try again.

        Give 5 back blows, 5 chest thrusts and attempt to ventilate.

        Continue until effective or EMS arrives.
